October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and DOVES will highlight the theme “Healthy Relationships—Partners’ Work” by hosting a special event on the 27th, the last Sunday in September. As with last year, DOVES hosts the “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” march through the Village, during which time men from the community are invited to join the Big Bear High School football team in donning women’s shoes, to underscore the obstacles, challenges and pain that women may suffer, especially in abusive relationships. Prior to the noon parade of men-in-heels on Sunday (which, last year, was both moving and comical), DOVES’ Executive Director Kathi Harper will join Pastor Don Foor at Community Church by the Lake for a special, 10:30am service, during which time the theme of “Healthy Relationships—Partners’ Work” will be highlighted. Families and individuals are invited to both the church service and the walk, which begins at the church, located on the Boulevard at Knickerbocker. There is no cost to participate, though a $10 donation will be accepted to assist DOVES in covering the cost of “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” t-shirts and shoes. For more information, or to secure a pair of man-sized heels, call DOVES at 866-1546. (DOVES offers Domestic Violence Education and Services, including a 24-hour crisis hotline at 800/851-7601.)
