Big Bear, Ca, September 27, 2011, 12:00pm – The Big Bear Valley Recreation and Park District can put $10,135 towards the Teen Center fund after this past weekend. According to Lorie Judd at Parks and Rec, the Teen Center needs $30,000 a year to operate. The new funds were a result of the Imagine: Beatles Tribute Band, and Teen Center Rock Star 2011 competition that took place on Saturday. Theresa Reagan-Blood, Don Foor, Tom Hastain and Liz Harris were the candidates vying for the title of Teen Center Rock star, which meant they raised funds, dressed up in costumes and performed at the event, all to raise money for the Teen Center. At the event Liz Harris was crowned as the fan favorite, and overall winner of Teen Center Rock Star, with Tom Hastain as a close second. Judd told KBHR that she is already getting calls and emails from people asking if Parks and Rec is going to put on this event again next year. Judd said that the event will definitely happen, and that she will be looking for candidates soon. The Teen Center serves 6th through 8th graders in the Big Bear Valley, offering a free place for kids to go after school, and do crafts, participate in athletic activities, and games. Next up for the fundraising front for the Teen Center is the Haunted House that will take place the last two weekends in October at the Meadow Park Gym. Judd also told KBHR that Parks and Rec has a goal to create a separate high school teen center in the future.
