Big Bear Lake, CA, August 27, 2014 – The Big Bear Lake City Council, in a 2 to 3 vote, gave the nod to move ahead with the Knickerbocker Creek Multi-Use Trail Project. The Council had previously directed city staff to reject all ‘over budget’ bids and then renegotiate in order to lower costs.
The total project price tag of $1,725,000. will be funded with a $510,000. grant from SANBAG as well as a $350,000. transportation/natural resources grant, plus $855,000. of local Measure Y funds, designated by voter approval for visitor enhancements. According to City Engineer David Lawrence, as much as 30% in additional labor costs is required because of state prevailing wage and grant requirements. And he also stated that without outside funding, this project would not be possible.
The new Knickerbocker Multi-Use Trail will link Veterans Park at the lake, with additional parking near the heart of the newly refurbished village. Proposed bridges will cross the creek at the park and at the new parking facility, enhancing access to shopping and dining.
In order to keep expenses down and in line, recycled village light posts as well as surplus pavers will be used in the project. Swapping concrete for wooden fencing has also helped cut costs. M.S. Construction Management Group will be awarded the contract and work should begin soon after the Labor Day holiday weekend.
