Big Bear, Ca, March 27, 2011, 3:00pm – The 15th annual Victor Alvarez Memorial Race took place on Saturday, March 26th. 35 men and 16 women came out to compete in the Dual Giant Slalom Style race. Skiers young and old competed against each other, as this race was an open format with no age brackets. Some participants came to the race with the intention of competing, and others just wanted to have a good time. 61 year old George Crezee, after qualifying 27th out of 32 people, decided he was going to have fun with it, and threw on a wig, an 80’s style ski sweater, and telemark skis, to entertain all of the spectators, and his competition for the first round of eliminations 13 year old Shawn Murphy. The top female competitor of the day was Karen Lundgren, Snow Summit Race Team coach, and all around adventure woman. Following closely behind was 14-year-old Rachel Desrochers, who started on the Snow Summit Race Team, and now lives and trains in Vail, Colorado. Third place for the women went to Snow Summit Race Team alumna Valerie Porges. The mens competition was close, but in the end Snow Summit Race Team Alum Jonathan Cherry took home the top spot, followed closely by current race team member Kelly Kai Tokunaga, and third place went to Race Team Head Coach Kyle Wormsbecker. All enjoyed the race, and the family of the late Victor Alvarez was grateful and appreciative to everyone who participated and watched the race.
