This weekend’s blustery storm brought over an inch of rain to the Big Bear Valley and at least two inches of snow; severe weather also prompted the closure of Highway 18 in the Arctic Circle area, due to slides in the roadway. Highway 18 had been closed in the 5 o’clock hour on December 12 and, following additional slides, was closed from about 9:30pm Saturday into Sunday afternoon. At this time [8:30am], all roadways to, from and within the Big Bear Valley are clear, and there are no longer any chain requirements in place for local roads, including Highways 18, 38 and 330. (Updated road information is available on KBHR’s Big Bear Road Conditions page.)
We can expect some minimal delays on the Boulevard however. A crew from the upcoming film “Hot Tub Time Machine,” which stars John Cusack, Chevy Chase and Crispin Glover, will be shooting pickups (as in “filming pickups” for post production) along Highway 38, and west toward town, crossing Division and onto Highway 18/Big Bear Boulevard. This filming will likely prompt some delays on the road though, we’re told, these shouldn’t be more than three minutes. Production will also continue on the slopes at Snow Summit today, though there is no expectation that the stars of “Hot Tub Time Machine” will be on site.
