Holiday Travelers Reminded to Buckle Up, Allow Extra Time, and Stay Sober on the Road

San Bernardino County, CA — Memorial Day weekend signifies the start of the summer travel season, and will also be a Maximum Enforcement Period for the California Highway Patrol. All available CHP officers will be on the road, starting Friday at 6pm and extending through midnight on Monday. As, during last year’s Memorial Day weekend, 45 people were killed on California roadways and, of those, nearly half were not wearing seatbelts, the CHP has implemented a Click It or Ticket campaign, encouraging all drivers and passengers to wear a seatbelt. “Insist everyone is properly restrained with a seat belt or child safety seat before starting your engine,” advises CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow. “Those two seconds could save your life or the life of someone you love.” CHP officers will also be on the alert for drunk drivers, as will be deputies with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. A sobriety and driver’s license checkpoint will be conducted here in the San Bernardino mountains over the holiday weekend and, notes the CHP: “Drivers who are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs can expect to be arrested.” So, this holiday weekend, plan ahead for holiday traffic and, adds Farrow, “It’s simple: Buckle up, watch your speed, and never drink and drive.”
