Big Bear, Ca, August 9, 2011, 3:36pm – At approximately 1:27pm this afternoon, the US Forest Service received a report of smoke in the air in the Holcomb Valley area near Bertha Peak. At this time it has been determined that 6-7 acres of a treed area is on fire, and the Forest Service Fire Fighters are on hand, along with the Bureau of Land Management, Cal Fire, Big Bear Lake and Big Bear City Fire, San Bernardino County Fire and the Big Bear Sheriff’s station assisting. Currently there are 10 fire engines, 6 crews, 5 water tenders, 4 helicopters, 2 air tankers, and 1 air attack assigned under command of forest service, and assisting entities. According to the Forest Service a line is currently around the fire with what is described as “shaky containment” as fire crews have stopped the forward spread, however they aren’t “out of the woods yet.” The fire is located west of the Holcomb Valley Scout Camp, and fire road 3n12 is closed due to fire equipment on the road. Forest Service Public Information Officer John Miller told KBHR that there is no current reason for people to be alarmed and that no one is being evacuated. The cause is under investigation.
