Big Bear, CA, April 15, 2016 – On April 20, 2016, Big Bear Prevention of Rim Family Services and the Breakthrough Task Force will host a community night in the Big Bear Middle School cafeteria where the film “Behind the Orange Curtain” will be screened. This film focuses on prescription drug use among youth in Southern California. Following the film, a brief presentation will be made giving community members information on how they can take action to prevent prescription drug abuse in our Valley.
“Behind the Orange Curtain” delves into the staggering problem of teenage drug abuse in Orange County, one of the most affluent counties in the country. It focuses on the fact that prescription drugs do not discriminate, they do not care about social, educational, or economic backgrounds. It does not matter if one lives on Park Avenue or the park bench, the steps to addiction are simple. The overall goal of the film is to increase awareness and give a call to action.
The documentary is important and relevant to the Big Bear community because the results of a recent Youth Attitudes and Perceptions Survey shows that in Big Bear the top three drugs abused by young people are marijuana, alcohol, and prescription drugs and Ecstasy tied for third. By showing this film and providing community members with steps they can take to prevent prescription drug abuse, this workshop can help reduce the number of teens in our area who succumb to this addiction.
