Big Bear, CA, May 2, 2011, 5:00pm – Family and friends of DOVES, Big Bear’s local domestic violence shelter, were present at a dedication of the local DOVES shelter to honor former board member and domestic violence survivor, Lorrie Rennick. In a ceremony on Saturday, April 30th, Michael Natzic, DOVES Chairman, and Kathi Harper, Executive Director unveiled an inscription dedicating the home in honor of Mrs. Rennick as “Lorrie’s House”. As a tribute to his wife, Dick Rennick paid the remaining mortgage balance on the home, in turn, dedicating the shelter in her honor. As Mr. Natzic stated, “this house will be her permanent mark on our community”. The Rennicks lived in Big Bear from 2004 to 2009 and Mrs. Rennick worked for DOVES before becoming a member of the board. The DOVES shelter is a place for domestic violence victims to rebuild their lives in a 6-month rehabilitation program that provides counseling and job training in a home setting. The shelter can accommodate up to 17 people. Past board member, Janet Trott, spoke on the history of the house that was purchased in 1993. She reminisced about how there were times she and staff went three months without pay in order to pay the mortgage on the property. The generous contribution by the Rennicks ensures that there will always be a home and help for those in need to provide shelter, education and love for victims of domestic violence. Mr. Natzic tells KBHR that the DOVES Annual Support Campaign will begin this Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 8th and end on Father’s Day, June 19th. The organization’s goal this year is to raise $35,000 for the general fund which covers expenses that are not grant funded.
