With flu season soon upon us, the San Bernardino County Department of Public Health is recommending seasonal flu shots, particularly for children (ages six months and older), individuals over 50 years of age, pregnant women, those with chronic medical conditions, caregivers, and those who live in nursing homes and long-term care facilities. The Health Department will be offering the seasonal flu vaccine at clinics throughout the county, and will visit Big Bear on Monday, October 5, from 10am to noon. Though at the Big Bear Senior Center, the flu clinic is open to Valley residents of all ages, with flu shots being offered at $10 each, cash only. Given limited parking at the Senior Center, an appointment is recommended by calling 584-0323, though walk-ins are welcome.
The flu shots offered on October 5 are for the seasonal flu, not the H1N1 virus (formerly known as the swine flu). The Big Bear Lake Fire Department’s Michelle Caldwell, who addressed City Council with regard to the H1N1 virus earlier this week, noted that the vaccine for H1N1 would likely be unavailable until mid-October. She also pointed out that the H1N1 virus, which has accounted for eight deaths in San Bernardino County, passes through coughs, uncovered sneezes, and physical contact, such as touching. Until a vaccine is available, Fire Prevention Officer Caldwell recommends plenty of rest, good diet and exercise and, in her words, “Take care of yourself, in a nutshell.”
