Today marks the last day for San Bernardino County Assessor Bill Postmus, whose position has been filled by Assistant Assessor Dennis Draeger since Postmus was arrested for drug possession in January. In a letter to County Supervisors Chairman Gary Ovitt, Postmus writes: “My resignation from the Office of Assessor will take effect Friday, February 13, 2009 at noon… I am leaving my position as County Assessor to focus on restoring my personal health. As news reports suggest, I am struggling to overcome a battle with substance abuse.” In the resignation letter, Postmus also cites his proudest accomplishment while in office, noting that his implementation of tax reduction to local homeowners saved taxpayers nearly $70 million. “Also,” the letter adds, “I would like to apologize to those I have let down. Failing you and failing myself was never the objective of my career. For that, I am truly sorry and ask your forgiveness. To my political opponents and anyone I have ever offended in the course of my political career, this day must be so sweet. I understand.” As Postmus has been under investigation by the District Attorney’s office, as he faces felony charges of drug possession, County Supervisors were unable to comment on his resignation.
