Big Bear City, CA, September 12, 2011, 3:00pm– On Saturday, September 10th, 2011, the Big Bear Valley Community Emergency Response Team, CERT, conducted a five hour training exercise at the CSD Paradise Yard in Big Bear City to implement their training knowledge. The training included three scenarios: conduct a search and rescue of a victim within a steel building in the dark; damage assessment of houses and buildings; and the proper use of a compass with a scenario to report to their Command Center. The main objective of the field day was to test the communication abilities of members and their knowledge of the communication process used by CERT. Field teams communicated information by FSR radios or by Ham radio back to their Division Leaders, who then relayed that information to the Command Center. The Command Center had a copy of all the scenarios to check the accuracy of the reporting from the CERT members. It was “a very successful” training exercise according to CERT Secretary Yomar Cleary.
