National statistics suggest that one-third of teenagers have been the victims of cyberbullying via online tools, such as cell phones—and over half of American teens have admitted to sending hurtful messages. In an effort to address this issue locally, the local parent support group Common Ground has partnered with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department to present a free, informative workshop for parents; this workshop, on September 9, will address the consequences of cyberbullying and sexting, which involves illicit text messages. The free, 90-minute workshop next Wednesday will be followed by practical suggestions for parents considering limiting their teens’ cell phone and Internet use. The Common Ground-sponsored workshop will be offered at Community Church by the Lake (on Big Bear Boulevard at Knickerbocker in Big Bear Lake) on Wednesday, September 9 at 6:30pm and though free, parents are asked to RSVP by calling Common Ground at 801-1766, or by visiting their website at BigBearCommonGround.com. Common Ground also offers resources and regular, Monday evening workshops for parents in an effort to strengthen the mutual respect between parents and teens.
