Angelus Oaks, CA, April 26, 2013 – Officials closed State Route 38 Friday morning due to a major fuel spill, in what could be a long-term closure. The closure is in effect from Lake Williams to Valley of the Falls Drive, a thirty-mile stretch of highway.
At approximately 9:35 a.m., a tanker truck carrying about 10,000 gallons of fuel overturned on the highway just northeast of Angelus Oaks. Caltrans reports that 1700 gallons of gas and diesel had spilled by the first hour, with more slowly leaking onto the road and a nearby creek, prompting notification of Fish and Wildlife crews.
The Haz-Mat nature of this incident means that Highway 38 will be closed for an unknown duration as the toxic material is cleared from the area.
