The City of Big Bear Lake’s free curbside chipping program wraps this month, but residents still have two weekends to finish clearing overgrown and dead vegetation from properties in an effort to clear defensible space and make residences more fire-safe. All calls to the chipping line, and all piles to the curbside, must be done by Thursday, October 15 to assure pickup before the winter season, as Public Works crews will then transition to winter-related duties. To request free chipping services from the City of Big Bear Lake, call 752-2805 and leave your name, address and phone number. Please note that, when leaving vegetation curbside, the following will not be accepted: rootballs, limbs or tree trunks larger than eight inches in diameter, construction lumber, or bagged material, including pine needles and leaves. (Call Big Bear Disposal for pickup of bagged items at 866-3942.) The City’s Fire Protection District also asks, that if clearing defensible space within Big Bear Lake, you log your hours spent doing so at ThinIsIn.org.
