You may recall that, on Monday, Highway 330 was closed for hours, due to an accident involving a big rig, which had allegedly (per the CHP) lost its brakes. Since that time, on Wednesday, a commercial enforcement unit with the California Highway Patrol was on the mountain, conducting roadside inspections of commercial trucks—which, officials tell KBHR, was not prompted by Monday’s incident, but had already been planned. The commercial inspection station was set up on Highway 18 at Snow Valley on September 23, and the team performed 18 inspections. Per the CHP’s statement issued today, five of those 18 vehicles passed the inspection and received safety inspection stickers. However, two drivers were issued citations and 11 drivers received verbal warnings for minor mechanical violations—those included three for brake violations, five registration violations, two tire violations, four steering violations, and others for miscellaneous infractions, including frame/suspension. A subsequent inspection station, on Highway 189 at Highway 18 yesterday, resulted in nine violations of the 15 trucks inspected, one of which was impounded, placing the driver out of service, per the CHP.
