Tomorrow is Earth Day, which has been celebrated in support of the environment since 1970. If looking for ways to enjoy Earth Day with others, the Sierra Club will be hosting their Spring Fling potluck this evening at 6:30pm at the Discovery Center. Though not an Earth Day-specific event, the Sierra Club Big Bear Group dinner will include a tribute to John Muir (whose birthday is April 21). Tomorrow morning (April 22), the Mountain Top Hiking Club will host one of over a dozen community hikes scheduled for this month. The Earth Day hike launches from the Green Valley Lake area at 9am, and will be a moderate trek along one of the ridge trails. Big Bear’s Earth Day celebration, tomorrow (April 22) from 11am to 2pm, will be hosted by Bear Valley Electric Service, at their offices at 42020 Garstin Drive. Participating agencies at the Earth Day event will include the Big Bear Lake Department of Water and Power, the Big Bear City Community Services District and the Big Bear Area Regional Wastewater Agency. BVES will, in addition to processing HEAP applications at 9am and 1pm, be offering power plant tours and free solar hot dogs. At 4pm, the Big Bear Library will host a children’s Earth Day program. To do your part in support of Earth Day, the City of Big Bear Lake also offers these suggestions, as provided by the Earth Day network: Buy products with less packaging and recycle paper, plastic and glass; turn off electronics and lights that are not in use; replace printer paper with 100% post-consumer recycled paper; and buy organic food, as it is better for you and better for the environment.
