Big Bear, Ca, August 17, 2011, 4:00pm – In an effort to start the school year off right, and keep the focus in our valley wide schools on education, a canine detection intervention program was brought in to Big Bear High School, Big Bear Middle School and Chautauqua High School on August 9th. Bear Valley Unified School District worked in collaboration with law enforcement bringing 5 different dogs on the three campuses. Superintendent of Schools Kurt Madden joined Big Bear High School Principal, Mike Ghelber, along with a canine and it’s handler to go through some of Big Bear High’s classrooms. Mr. Madden was pleased to report that Big Bear High School and Chautauqua High School both had no concerns, however, at Big Bear Middle School, one student was found in possession of a small amount of marijuana. Disciplinary actions were taken. According to Superintendent Madden, the school district wants to do everything possible to keep student focus on achievement, and eliminate any abuse or substances that may have an impact on teaching or learning.
