Big Bear, Ca June 22, 2011 12:00 pm – It’s not a question if you’ll be attending Friday’s grand opening of Big Bear’s new bridge. Just about everyone in the area is planning to be there. The question is if you plan to be on the bridge deck, the deck of one of the local tour boats, or attending on a bicycle, kayak, or your pontoon boat. During the ceremony, access to the bridge and the dam will be closed. To help traffic flow, MARTA is offering shuttle service from City Hall from 10 am until 1:00 pm. The City’s Cheri Haggerty is coordinating the shuttle service and is suggesting that people plan to arrive early. The Chamber of Commerce and Big Bear businesses are supporting the event. The Big Bear Pirate Ship, Miss Liberty Paddlewheel Tour Boat, and the Big Bear Queen are offering free rides to families with children. Contact Alan Sharpe of the Big Bear Marina if your family would like a ride on the tour boats. If you’re renting a pontoon or planning to attend in your boat, canoe, or kayak, boats on the water near the dam are encouraged and welcome. Along with the opening of Highway 330, the bridge opening represents full access to the Valley for visitors and residents. It is cause for big celebration. The City of Big Bear Lake and the Resort Association are encouraging everyone to attend, to wear red, white, and blue, and to wave flags or hang an American flag from their boat.
