Forty-nine basketball teams from eight communities participated in this weekend’s 11th annual Youth Basketball Tournament hosted by the Big Bear Valley Recreation and Park District. According to Recreation Supervisor Aaron Speer, “Everyone comes from miles around to participate.” Some of those communities included Beaumont, Redondo Beach and Needles, who sent athletes, both boys and girls, in eight age divisions to the tournament, held concurrently at Meadow Park, Big Bear Middle School and Big Bear High School. “It was a great tournament,” Speer adds. “Lots of people came up and we had lots of fun.” The winningest of the local teams was the Big Bear All-Star Under-14 Girls Team, which placed third overall—or as Rec and Park’s Glenn Jacklin says, “We call that winning the consolation final.” The next group sports program being offered by the Big Bear Valley Recreation and Park District is adult soccer; play will begin once fields are thawed, likely in April.
