Big Bear Lake, Ca, September 28, 2010, 4:00pm – The Goldsprints World Championships were held last Thursday in Las Vegas, Nevada, in which four Big Bear locals competed. Derek Hermon, Clay Bennett, Steve Marshall, and Angela Meyers all competed in the stationary bike races, which require riders to spin as fast as they can for 500 and 1000 meters. Competitors came from across the United States, with a few coming from out of the country to participate. Bennett, Marshall, and Hermon all made it to the semi finals in the Men’s Division, with Hermon placing third in the 1000 meter final against a professional track racer from Seattle, riders from Salt Lake City Utah, and Boulder, Colorado. Meyers made it to the 1000 meter final in the women’s division, and after beating professional mountain bike riders, and last years Goldsprint winner, won the competition, and became a Goldsprints World Champion. Meyers took home $420 in cash, and a set of Krietler bike rollers. “I’m spending the cash on new tires for my car,” said Meyers, “I can’t wait to train on the rollers, they will come in handy in the winter!” Meyers also stated that she was shocked she won, when she just started cycling in March. “It just came naturally,” Meyers said, “I needed to go fast, so I did.” The four locals that competed all race for team Bear Valley Bikes.
