Big Bear Lake, CA 1/22/16 – The Big Bear Valley Recreation and Park District has announced that on January 13th, bids for the new Big Bear Alpine Zoo were opened. There were a total of eight bids submitted and the District has reported there was one apparent low bidder. Further, they went on to say that once the bids are reviewed and deemed qualified that they will release more details.
This was the second bite at the apple for the contractor’s, as on November 19, 2015 the eight bids were received but all needed to be rejected because “None of the bids qualified”. There was nothing wrong with the bidders but there were issues with the details contained in their bids. At that time the bid threshold was set at $7,500,000 and three contracting companies were below that threshold. The new Zoo location is nearly 11 acres and situated just north of the Bear Mountain Golf Course. The new size is a far cry from the 1 acre site located near the base of Bear Mountain. This project is being funded by the County along with other volunteer and foundation support. The new Big Bear Alpine Zoo is expected to increase gate revenues as a way to support their $1,200,000 annual operating budget.
