If you’ve seen some slick and sporty vintage vehicles around town, they will all be coming together on Sunday, as the Big Bear Lake Antique Car Club hosts their annual Memorial Day Show and Shine, featuring pre-1962 automobiles. The day-long car show on the 24th runs from 8am to 3pm at the Citibank parking lot, just east of Summit on Big Bear Boulevard in Big Bear Lake. At 10am, the annual race-off of the Valley-wide Pinewood Derby takes place; 12 5th grade finalists from the three elementary schools will be competing to bring home the perpetual trophy, which is currently housed at Baldwin Lane Elementary School. According to the Big Bear Lake Antique Car Club, Baldwin Lane’s Ms. Rice want to keep the trophy; Big Bear Elementary 5th grade teacher Mr. Waner wants the trophy back, and North Shore Elementary Principal Mr. Amburgey says the kids won’t graduate to sixth grade unless they win back the perpetual award. Still, all in good fun, the finals of the Pinewood Derby will feature the handmade wooden cars made by the Valley’s 5th grade students in a 10am race. The car club’s Show and Shine is free to the public, and will include a People’s Choice Award.
