Big Bear, Ca, April 19, 2011, 8:00am – In 2009 a survey was taken of local Big Bear youth, which found that 70% of teens at the time reported that alcohol was easy for the to get. According to the American Medical Association alcohol is the number one drug of choice for youth and is the leading contributing cause of death for teenagers. For these reasons April has been designated as Alcohol Awareness Month. The Breakthrough Task Force in association with Big Bear Recovery Services is the local drug prevention coalition, and is standing with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration to raise community awareness in the mountain region regarding the dangers and growing problems associated with underage drinking and potential solutions. The Breakthrough Task Force encourages everyone to take the time to educate yourself and your loved ones about the dangers of underage drinking. The Breakthrough Task Force meets monthly.
