San Bernardino County, CA — San Bernardino County Sheriff Rod Hoops has announced that the County’s DUI Task Force will be deploying DUI saturation patrols, meaning additional law enforcement on the road, on Super Bowl Sunday, with a specific focus on arresting drunk drivers—and the Big Bear area is one of 18 communities that will be targeted within San Bernardino County. In a statement from Sheriff Hoops, he says, “Drunk driving is the top priority for the police, CHP and sheriff’s deputies, but everyone who is hosting a party and serving drinks could have one of the best defenses there is against drunk drivers: a designated sober driver. We are asking for our community’s help by planning for a designated sober driver at every Super Bowl party long before kickoff.” Super Bowl Sunday has become one of the nation’s most dangerous days on the roadways due to impaired driving; in California on last Super Bowl Sunday, 11 people were killed and another 133 injured in alcohol-involved collisions which is, tragically, three times the daily average for these fatalities and double for injuries. Those hosting Super Bowl parties are also reminded that you can be held liable and prosecuted if someone you served ends up in an impaired-driving crash. So, on Super Bowl Sunday, revelers are reminded to designate a sober driver, and the Sheriff’s Department asks that motorists report drunk drivers by calling 911.
