Big Bear Valley, CA — The Big Bear Valley’s Boy Scout Troop 49 has earned a special distinction, being named the 2009 Troop of the Year by the High Desert District, California Inland Empire Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Our local troop, led by Scoutmaster Alyn Nielsen, was granted the Troop of the Year honor over other scout troops from the high desert and all the way to Barstow due to their consistent scouting activity, which also includes a campout every month, in the Big Bear Valley and beyond. Troop 49 includes 46 boys, ages 12 to 18, and among those are five Eagle Scouts; many of these young men were in attendance at this week’s Memorial Day ceremony, as well as the Antique Car Club’s Sunday show, which included the Pinewood Derby. Other civic events of late include August’s Old Miners’ Days Parade, in which the scout’s homemade and elaborate float, designed entirely by the boys, earned the top prize in the youth division. Those with boys interested in joining Boy Scout Troop 49 will have an introduction at each of the three elementary schools in coming days; visits will be made to Big Bear Elementary on Wednesday, June 2 at 2:15pm, Baldwin Lane on Friday, June 4 at 2:40pm, and North Shore Elementary on Friday, June 11 at 2:10pm. For more information, Scoutmaster Alyn Nielsen can be reached at 585-6726.
