Today marks the first day of autumn and, yet, per KBHR’s weatherman Ben Brissey, we can expect temperatures nearing 80 degrees today, September 22. With the warm temperatures and the expectation of winds and low relative humidity in the San Bernardino mountains, the National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning, meaning that critical fire conditions are expected. This Red Flag Warning is in effect as of this morning and through Thursday evening. Given the fire growth potential, CalFire has issued a proclamation, effective this week, suspending burning permits and other uses of open fire; this order from CalFire Unit Chief Doug McKain applies to all state-responsibility area lands within the County of San Bernardino. In addition to the suspension of open burning, the following restrictions are also in effect: use of campfires restricted to established campfire facilities located in established campgrounds; and cooking fires with a valid permit are allowed when no alternate means of cooking is available, and requires an on-site inspection prior to the issuance of a permit. Chief McKain’s proclamation also outlines that agricultural burning in the High Desert region, including Lucerne Valley, is authorized as required for agricultural rehabilitation. But, again, for our area, expect warm temperatures on this first day of fall, and please be fire safe, given the National Weather Service’s Red Flag Warning for our area this week.
