Big Bear Lake, CA, March 11, 2014 – Nearly 500 people took a quick dip in the lake Saturday to benefit Special Olympics athletes in the third annual Big Bear Lake Polar Plunge. The goal for Plunge organizers was to raise at least $50,000. and it looks like they will more than double that.
44 teams and numerous individuals ran into the 45 degree water for a great cause. 10 athletes here in Big Bear and others from the Inland Empire will benefit directly from this event. They will receive help to pay for training, transportation and lodging, allowing them to participate in events such as bowling, and track and field competitions.
The teams were quite creative, as usual. There were the Big Bear Copsicles, the Kiwanis Ice Cube (it would have been Cubes, but one cube was sick), the MWD Freezer Pops, Team Keller Williams wore tutus, a SWAT team and the Fire Department in full gear took the plunge, and of course the Big Bear Special Olympic Athlete Superheroes. 86 cents of every dollar raised goes directly to the Special Olympics.
