San Bernardino County, Ca, December 7, 2010, 1:00pm – The San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors has given final approval to an effort initiated by Supervisor Neil Derry that would cap leave time for exempt employees. The board unanimously approved the ordinance today. The new policy, which will go into effect for 2011, converts the administrative leave benefit to a use-it-or-lose-it system and cap the number of hours employees can bank for vacation and holiday time at 480 and 112 hours, respectively. One of the problems facing the county budgeting process is a lack of clarity regarding total liabilities and this measure will give the chief executive officer the ability to accurately forecast expenses. “County taxpayers should see this as a signal that the county will continue to re-examine policies and move to adopt practices that are consistent with the private sector as we cope with this economic downturn,” stated Supervisor Derry.
