Big Bear, Ca, March 30, 2011, 12:00pm –With spring weather returning more bicycles have been spotted around town. Bicycles are used for recreation, and as transportation around the valley, therefore KBHR and the Big Bear Cycling Association want to remind motorists and cyclists of rules of the road to keep Big Bear a safe environment for cyclists. A bicycle operated on a roadway or highway shoulder shall be operated in the same direction as vehicles are required to drive on the roadway. Cyclists are required to give hand signals when turning or stopping. A person under 18 years of age is required to wear a helmet when riding a bike, and although it is not required for those over 18, it is highly recommended. It is unlawful for any person to ride a bicycle while under the influence of an alcoholic beverage or any drug; persons who do ride under the influence of alcohol or drugs may be arrested. Cyclists who travel during the nighttime hours when it is dark are required to have front and back lights on their bicycle. Although it is not required, it is a good idea for cyclists to carry a bike pump and spare tube while riding at all times in case of a flat tire. Cyclists are encouraged to wear bright colors, and reflective gear to make themselves known to motorists. For more information on road laws involving cyclists go to www.bigbearcycling.com
