Big Bear Valley, CA — Bear Valley Unified School District students begin a four-day weekend today, in observance of Lincoln’s birthday and Presidents’ Day, and when they return to school next week, elementary students will have the opportunity to participate in free dental screenings offered through the Rotary Club of Big Bear Lake. The years-long program, which assists parents in complying with the 2007 law dictating that all new kindergartner or first grade students receive a dental screening during their first year of public school, is offered to all kindergartners, third and fifth grade students whose parents sign the permission slips sent home earlier. The free dental screenings will be performed by local dentists, all of whom volunteer their services, and will take place at Baldwin Lane, Big Bear and North Shore Elementaries from 9am to noon on Wednesday the 17th. Each kindergartner, third and fifth grade student who participates in the dental screening program will receive a goodie bag, including toothbrush and toothpaste, and those identified with dental issues will receive parent notification from school health officials at Bear Valley Unified.
