The visual clutter of assorted newsracks within Big Bear Lake will soon be modified, as the Planning Commission on January 7 approved the revised newsrack ordinance, which will now go before City Council for final approval. Though not yet on Council’s agenda, when and if Council approves the ordinance, all wire, wood and plastic newsracks will have to be removed immediately, if on public property (including the Village L, extended north to the Big Bear Lake Post Office). The new ordinance dictates that all newsracks within Big Bear Lake will be fixed pedestal newsracks of a consistent design, placement and color. Publishers of periodicals will be required to adhere to these new standards within one year; however, on private property, newsrack compliance to the new ordinance would be required within five years. The removal of all wire, wood and plastic newsracks would be required within one year for private properties but, again, all these dictates are contingent on the ordinance’s passing by the City Council of Big Bear Lake.
