The Municipal Water District has noticed an increase in traffic—not in boats on the lake, but vehicles attempting to drive on the lake bottom along the shoreline, especially in the Stanfield Marsh area at Baker Pond. Per the MWD, vehicles are not allowed in this area, given the unique habitat. According to Lake Operations Supervisor Travis Carroll, “Not only do vehicles destroy sensitive habitat, they leave trenches and take the possibility of getting stuck.” The MWD and Big Bear Sheriff’s Station deputies are issuing citations, which result in fines, to those drivers off-roading in sensitive habitat areas along the shoreline of Big Bear Lake or Baker Pond. Citations are also issued to those who go on the lake ice; fines for this infraction can total up to $500.
