Big Bear, Ca, July 22, 2011, 12:00pm – Bear Valley Unified School District, the Bear Valley Unified School District Board of Trustees, the District’s Interim Superintendent Dr. Kegham Tashjian, the former Principal of Big Bear Middle School Julie Chamberlin, and Big Bear Middle School teacher Suzy Carpenter have had a federal lawsuit filed against them by MALDEF, the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education fund. The charges were made on behalf of a student at Big Bear Middle School on charges that the student’s civil rights had been violated. According to MALDEF the teacher made inappropriate comments to the student after she wore a Mexico soccer jersey to school last year during the World Cup. According to MALDEF, the lawsuit addresses the right of all students to an education free of unjustified and unlawful discrimination on the basis of race, national origin and actual or perceived immigration status. With this lawsuit, MALDEF seeks to demonstrate to this school district, as well as other districts, schools, and educators, that permitting a hostile educational environment violates the basic right to an education. KBHR will have more information on this story as it becomes available.
