There are now 24 fires burning on the San Bernardino National Forest, however most of these are single tree fires, and most of them sparked by lightning this week. Additional fires were spotted this morning in the San Gorgonio wilderness area, bringing the current number of fires on the forest to 24—though none of these fires are burning in the Big Bear Valley. Of the blazes being battled by the firefighting crews of the U.S. Forest Service, several were contained yesterday, and a couple more have been controlled. As for the Peak Fire, which is burning on the San Bernardino Peak between Angelus Oaks and Forest Falls, it has been held to 20 acres so far. The Forest service tells KBHR that good progress was made on the Peak Fire yesterday which, as of Thursday morning, had been at 10 acres. There are some concerns given today’s potential for additional thunderstorms and lightning, but John Miller with the U.S. Forest Service says that they are fully staffed and are continuing to patrol for additional spot fires. At this time, there are still no fires in the Big Bear Valley and all roads to and from the mountain are open.
Update as of 5pm: There are still no fires burning in the Big Bear Valley, and the Forest Service reports that the Peak Fire has been held to roughly 20 acres and is now 50% contained.
