As we enjoy comfortable summertime temperatures in the Big Bear Valley, areas below are experiencing an increase in high temperatures and lower humidity levels through Saturday prompting the rating for fire danger in the San Bernardino Mountains to “Very High”. According to John Miller, Public Information Officer for the U.S. Forest Service, a National Fire Rating Danger System determines the rating system. However, the “Very High” rating has put them on a heightened level of alert. Under these conditions, U.S. Forest personnel need to look at what resources are available in terms of restricting what activities are allowed by the public. The Forest Service “Know Before You Go” program will highlight current conditions for our National Forest. Permission for campfires in remote or undeveloped areas is determined by the fire hazard conditions. In our area, campfires are only allowed in designated campground areas with agency provided fire rings. To use a propane or gas stove or lantern outside a developed campground or recreation area, you need to obtain a California Campfire Permit. These are available at the Big Bear Discovery Center and all National Park Ranger Stations and must be picked up in person.
