The Big Bear Disposal project, to construct an indoor sorting facility for Valley-wide recyclables, went before the Planning Commission for the County of San Bernardino today, and per the County’s Deputy Director of Current Planning Bob Dawson, the plans as recommended by staff were unanimously approved by the four commissioners in attendance. Members of the Big Bear community were present at the county meeting; we are told that four spoke in opposition to the project and two spoke in favor of the facility, to be constructed on a 5+ acre parcel between the airport and Highway 38. In a subsequent conversation with Big Bear Disposal’s Frank Forbes this afternoon, he tells KBHR, “The next step is we move forward with the development plans. Hopefully we’ll get started on groundbreaking sometime this year. The first step will be to widen the highway, and then do the wall and landscaping.”
