City Council Opposes Portion of Governor’s Proposed Budget

Big Bear, Ca, January 26, 2011, 3:00pm – At the January 24^th regularly scheduled meeting of the City Council, a resolution was adopted in opposition to Governor Jerry Brown’s 2011-2012 State Budget Proposal.  Council was specifically in opposition to the portion of the budget that aims at eliminating local California redevelopment agencies, which would affect the city’s redevelopment areas, which include the Village, Moonridge, and Big Bear Blvd.  The redevelopment fund in the past has helped fund projects such as the Boulder Bay Park, the Performing Arts Center, Visitors Center Building, Bartlett Street Parking lot in the Village, and many others.  The low income housing that the City is mandated to create is partially funded through the redevelopment fund.   If the budget passes, and the money is not available, the City will still be mandated to finish the low income housing, with no help.  Council members voted unanimously to pass the resolution against this possible budget cut to our local economy.
