Big Bear, Ca, September 7, 2011, 12:00pm – Come springtime Big Bear Middle School grounds will be blooming, and filled with daffodils. This past Saturday three Soroptimists along with 25 students, Bear Valley Unified School District Trustee Dr. Al Waner, Big Bear Middle School Principal Tina Fulmer, and other community members, faculty and staff helped plant over 150 daffodil bulbs, daisies and other flowers on the BBMS grounds. According to Soroptimist Teresa Regan-Blood, the idea of the planting came out of a BBMS School Climate Committee meeting. The committee, which started 2 years ago, was created to reduce bullying on campus. The committee thought the idea of planting flowers would be a great learning experience for students, and would bring some color and life to campus. The Soroptimists donated the daffodil bulbs, and Jason Schetter, a teacher at the Middle School, donated some daisies. The planting of the bulbs helps strengthen the new gardening program at the middle school, where students are planting seeds of plants and flowers, and are watching their progress as they grow.
