Big Bear Lake Fire Chief Rod Ballard announced on April 25that the Big Bear Lake Fire Protection District Meeting that he is resigning from his position as fire chief to spend more time with his family. In a letter to Jay Obernolte, Chairperson of the Big Bear Lake Fire Protection District, Ballard stated, “although there are still items needing attention, I am pleased with the fire district’s accomplishments over the past two years and the multi-agency changes I have supported during my time as the fire chief.” Ballard also stated “the timing of my departure allows the Fire District a chance to save on employee expenses and transition to a more cost efficient fire administration during these challenging economic times.” Ballard noted that he would work with the Fire Board on the effective date of his resignation. Ballard also thanked the Big Bear community for making him feel welcomed, and he stated that he appreciated the support from City Staff, the City Manager, and the Fire Board, especially thanking the Fire District.
