Big Bear, CA, March 22, 2011, 5:00pm – Earlier this month, Julie Chamberlin, Principal of Big Bear Middle School, was advised by the Bear Valley Unified School District Interim Superintendent that she would be relieved of her responsibilities as Principal and would be returning to the classroom as of the start of the 2011-2012 school year. At the recommendation of the Interim Superintendent, Dr. Kegham Tashjian, the Bear Valley Unified School District Board of Trustees unanimously voted in a 4-0 vote on the resolution in closed session at the March 2nd meeting. The fifth board member, Paul Zamoyta, was absent from the closed session that evening. As closed session agenda discussion and personnel items are not open to the public, Tim Larson, Director of Personnel, had no comment. Mrs. Chamberlin has been an employee of BVUSD for 24 years beginning her career in the District Office before becoming a teacher at North Shore and Baldwin Lane Elementary Schools before assuming the role of Vice-Principal and, subsequently, Principal at Baldwin Lane Elementary transferring to the Big Bear Middle School as Principal seven years ago. In a statement to KBHR, Mrs. Chamberlin has stated, “Understandably personnel matters are also personal matters. I will say this…this change was completely unexpected. I have been told that it is not based on competency or performance, I still have not been told what the reason is. The best way to sum it up is, politics.” It is unknown at this time which school Mrs. Chamberlin will be transferred to. In returning to her teaching roots, she states that she loves working with children and has always enjoyed teaching.
