Big Bear Lake, CA, January 17, 2013 – As the new year begins, San Bernardino County continues to struggle with public safety issues related to the use of alcohol, particularly among underage drinkers. In San Bernardino County alone in 2011, more than 10,000 people were hospitalized due to injuries or illnesses related to alcohol use, according to California’s Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development. Unfortunately, the bad news doesn’t end there. According to the most recent data released by the California Highway Patrol, the county ranked second in the state in the number of alcohol-related traffic fatalities in 2010. Despite national and state initiatives that have sought to regulate alcohol sales and keep it out of the hands of those under the age of 21, alcohol is still being consumed by underage youth.
