San Bernardino, CA, September 24, 2012, 8:30am – A man who was walking along SR 18 early Sunday morning was killed after being hit by a suspected drunk driver. According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department 30 year-old Carl Gene Evans was walking on the side of Highway 18 near Lower Waterman Canyon Road at 3:53am Sunday when he was hit by a woman suspected of being under the influence. The vehicle was being driven by 45 year-old Margaret Stegenga of Crestline. The victim, Carl Evans was released from the Central Detention Center in San Bernardino only a few hours earlier. He had been arrested in Crestline on miscellaneous warrants. The San Bernardino Police Department is conducting an investigation. Alcohol may have played a role in the incident according to a department press release.
