Big Bear Lake, California, October 22, 2012 – The citizens of Big Bear Valley have invested in fire protection and public safety by creating defensible space and vegetation thinning. In an effort to continue this critical work towards the reduction of fire risk, the communities of Big Bear Valley and surrounding areas use the services of San Bernardino County Code Enforcement to inspect and notice properties that are not in compliance with fire hazard abatement regulations.
A recent review of the Fire Hazard Abatement Ordinance for the City of Big Bear Lake revealed that residents had been inadvertently inspected, noticed, and cited according to the County’s Fire Hazard Abatement Ordinance, which is not applicable within the City of Big Bear Lake limits.
Properties within the City limits are subject to a variety of very similar fire hazard abatement regulations found within County code, but are governed by local city ordinance and municipal code which should have been cited within the Notice to Abate sent to properties within the city limits.
Currently, all inspections, notices, and citations regarding this matter are being held in abeyance for all properties within the incorporated City of Big Bear Lake. Property owners who feel that work done on their property or any charges imposed are inappropriate, they can address the matter with the Fire District to resolve the matter. The Big Bear Lake Fire Department can be reached at (909) 866-7566.
