Sergeant Daniel Sakai, the 35-year-old police officer who lost his life during a SWAT team operation in Oakland last month, will be recognized by the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors today. County Supervisor Neil Derry will recognize 1991 Big Bear High School graduate Sakai during Memorial Adjournments for the Third District in the 10am meeting to be held at the County Government Center in San Bernardino. Supervisors will also recognize Chief Master Sergeant Noel Mark Furniss of Big Bear with a resolution, given his retirement from 34 years of service in the U.S. Armed Forces. Other Big Bear Valley-related actions on the agenda for this morning’s meeting include a budgetary adjustment for snowplowing services in Erwin Lake. Given higher than expected snowfall totals, an additional $50,000 in contingency funds for County Service Area 70, Zone R-3 will be transferred to CSA 70’s services and supplies budget, to pay for past and potentially future snowplow services in this fiscal year. Today’s agenda for County Supervisors also includes employment contract approval for George Watson, Supervisor Derry’s selection to serve as his new chief of staff. And, Derry’s former field representative Jerry Lemke, who left his post citing his workload and other commitments, has also stepped down from his appointment on Sugarloaf Roads Commission. Lemke’s position on the CSA 70, Zone R-5 Commission was to expire in January 2013, as he had just been reappointed.
Update: Each of the aforementioned action items was approved by the Board of Supervisors on April 7.
