County Supervisors Look To Adopt New Spay/ Neuter Ordinance

Big Bear, Ca, August 24, 2011, 8:00am – On August 23^rd, the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors took the first step in adopting an ordinance that would require all dog owners in the unincorporated mountain areas to spay or neuter their dogs should they be found guilty of failing to abide by another state or local animal control regulation.  Supervisor Neil Derry who also backed a similar measure last year, which requires the spaying and neutering of pit bulls, presented the ordinance.  The measure will be read a second time at the Sept. 13 board meeting, and according to Supervisor Derry’s office, is expected to be adopted.  “We cannot solve the pet over-population issue through legislation, but over time we can minimize it and reduce the number of animals euthanized by our shelters at great expense to taxpayers,” Supervisor Derry said. “This measure will apply to those irresponsible and careless owners that do not abide by the rules and not encroach upon those who follow the rules.”   If you believe that a pet owner is not caring for their animals properly, please contact Animal Care and Control at:  1-800-472-5609.
