The Big Bear City Community Services District’s Board of Directors unanimously approved connection fee increases of 4.9% for water and sewer services in their Monday meeting, those these increases will not affect existing customers but service for new construction. The Board also approved the commercial disposal fee increase of 3.4%, in order to bring the fee up to the level established by San Bernardino County. A resolution to increase the fire protection tax by 3.41% was also approved; this increase, per CSD’s General Manager Mike Mayer, will amount to about $3.50 per residence annually.
The May 18 CSD meeting also included supervisor reports, indicating that the Sewer Department overseen by Mike Johanson is now up-to-date, despite the fact that last year this time they were 27 months behind schedule. In response to commendations from CSD Directors, Johanson said, “The staff has worked really hard to make that happen.” CSD’s Water Superintendent Tim Moran, for his part, noted that water Well 8 has been operating for a week with great results, and will be online for the holiday weekend, thus providing 19% more production from the district’s blending system.
In other news from the CSD Board, a resolution in honor of California Highway Patrol Sergeant David Bradley was approved, and was subsequently presented to him in a promotional lunch today, as his promotion takes him to Needles, where he will oversee the area as a CHP Lieutenant. The resolution recognizing Bradley acknowledges his 28 years with the CHP, during which time he received the California Medal of Valor in 1995, for having rescued the inhabitant of a burning home in Big Bear Lake.
CSD also welcomed the Garlands at their meeting, as Jamie Garland was introduced as she now serves as Third District County Supervisor Neil Derry’s mountain-area field representative; her husband, Captain Greg Garland, oversees the Big Bear Sheriff’s Station. Captain Garland, who had served as a detective in Big Bear in the early ‘90s, says he is happy to be back on the mountain, and told those in attendance that he welcomes calls from residents who have issues or comments on his department.
