Superbowl Sunday: Remember to Put Food Away

Big Bear, Ca, February 3, 2012, 8:00am - As you sit down with friends and family this Sunday to watch the Giants play the Patriots in the Superbowl, remember to put away perishable food, or keep an eye on how long the food has been out. Next to Thanksgiving, Super Bowl Sunday is the day that American’s consume the most food, and like Thanksgiving, large amounts of perishable foods are left out for hours before they are put back in the refrigerator, which increases the chances of food born illness. Illness caused by bad food can be severe, and can cause hospitalization or even death. To avoid food poisoning this Super Bowl Sunday, plan ahead, and plan to leave out only non-perishable foods. Avoid items that are high in dairy content, or only keep dairy items out for short amounts of time. Save food such as chicken wings, pizza, hamburgers, hotdogs and cold cuts for when they can be eaten right away. If you BBQ, be sure to avoid cross contamination by keeping ready to eat food separate from raw meat juices. If all else fails, remember the 2- hour rule. Do not leave any temperature sensitive or perishable food out for more than 2 hours. Most importantly remember to wash your hands with soap and warm water, and enjoy the game.

Winterfest: This Weekend!

Big Bear, Ca, February 2, 2012, 12:00pm - An age-old battle will come to Big Bear this weekend, starting Friday Night, with the inaugural XOS Battle of the Sexes: Winterfest in the Village of Big Bear Lake. This battle will be unlike any other that Big Bear has seen, in that it will showcase males vs females in three categories that include: a snowboard rail jam, fashion shows, and DJ battles. According to the Big Bear Lake Resort Association, the purpose of the event is to educate and uplift women through fun, non-competitive events vs. men, to raise awareness of breast cancer, and the value of living an active lifestyle. “We want to give women a comfortable forum where they can showcase their talents without any pressures. Winterfest is designed to give them a chance to playfully participate against the guys in a fun atmosphere,” said XOS Productions Event Producer Marisa Lupo. “The other key piece of Winterfest is to communicate the message about breast cancer, the importance of self examination and early detection, and to provide knowledge to fight the deadly disease.” The two-day event will take place on February 3^rd and 4^th in the Village at the Bartlett Parking Lot. Adult Night League Starts & Snow Summit Race Team Represents!

Big Bear, Ca, January 30, 2012, 3:00pm - This past weekend the slopes were filled with people as skiers and snowboarders enjoyed great snow with wonderful southern California weather. On Saturday and Sunday Snow Summit Race Team J-4 and J-5 racers competed in the Kyle Warren Memorial South Series giant slalom ski race. Top finishers for the Snow Summit Race Team included Mckinley Warren, Emerson Warren, Johann Auer and Alec Burton who beat the competition both days by over 15 seconds. Notably the J5 girls held their ground on Sunday against Team Mountain High with the six Snow Summit Race Team Girls taking the first top six spots, while on Saturday and Sunday J4 boys Emerson Warren, Johann Auer and Chase Dowty, all race team kids, battled it out for the top spot. In the adult racing arena, the first race for the Adult Night League was held on Saturday Night, and race team coach Thad Epting of Team Tequila put down the fastest time with Wade Reeser of Team Goldsmith, Snow Summits Mountain Manager taking second place. Kyle Wormsbecker, head coach for the Snow Summit Race Team invites everyone to come out and race. The next night league race will be held on February 11^th, and is open to anyone 18 and older.

Big Bear, Ca, January 25, 2012, 3:00pm – Adult ski racing is back at Snow Summit for the second year after a hiatus. The Saturday Night Race League, which is for adults 18 and older will start this Saturday, January 28^th, and will feature a duel giant slalom style course. Skiers and snowboarders can participate in the Giant Slalom race that takes place in the Jim Bollingmo Race Arena at the bottom of Miracle Mile, which is a viewer friendly slope, so spectators are welcome and invited to cheer on their friends and family. Registration will take place from 3:30 to 5:30pm in the VIP Room located in Bear Bottom Lodge. Inspection will take place from 5:00 to 5:45pm, with the race to start at 6:00pm. The Saturday Night League is a fundraiser for the Snow Summit Race Team. Skiers can create a team of three, and enter the team for the four race series for $300.00, which includes night lift ticket. If you can only make it to one event, or choose to ski as an individual, the price is $25.00 per race, and teams or individuals can sign up early at Goldsmiths Boardhouse.

Big Bear Cycling Association Seeks Volunteers

Big Bear, Ca, January 16, 2011, 5:00pm -The Big Bear Cycling Association had a busy year in 2011, and is looking to make 2012 even busier. Last year the then newly formed Big Bear Cycling Association was able to provide a full summer ride schedule of 14 rides a week, with timed training rides, and put on the Tour de Big Bear with 600 riders. The association also introduced the “Lids for Kids” program, with a goal of having helmets for all children 12 and under. So far 65 helmets were purchased and distributed. The cycling association, with help from various community members was able to put on educational seminars about health, nutrition and cycling to over 200 people. In 2012, the group is looking to expand their programs, and launch a few new ones, and they are looking for volunteers to help grow the organization. Snow Summit Race Team J3's and Coaches at Sugarbowl Ski Resort

The second race in the Goldsmith’s Race Series took place this Sunday, with many local children and adults turning up to race down the giant slalom course. Top finishers for the Snow Summit Race Team and Masters Team included Mark Millson, Brady Nilsson, Lyndsay Harris, Florin Oprea, Karli Kendall, Johann Auer, Elle Williams, Mckinley Warren, John Boucher, Susan Kendall, Nicolai Stoilov, and Laura Johnson. Development team, All Mountain Team, and Novice race top finishers included Ryan Dosa, Trinity Dostrow, James Gill, Haley Hoskins, Nathaniel Bratter, Mckenzie Lawrence, Mia Ortega, Graham Miller, Sierra Kim, Nate Williams, and Simona Trentchev. A majority of the Snow Summit Race Team J3 boys and girls were not present at the Goldsmith’s race, as they were competing at a Far West Skiing Race at Sugarbowl Ski Resort in the Lake Tahoe area. Out of 80+ competitors, Big Bear’s own Sean Murphy was able to stay in the top 14 each day with a 4^th place finish on day one, and 7^th place finish on day two. Connor Hafen finished in 14^th place on day two, and Evan Williams finished in 7^th place on day three. The next Goldsmiths Race will be held on Sunday February 12^th.

Ryan Hall Takes 2nd Place In Olympic Trials

Ryan Hall will be returning to the Olympic arena in 2012 after he placed 2nd in the Olympic Trials this past weekend. Hall will join 1st place finisher Meb Keflezighi, and 3rd place finisher Abdi Abdirahman as the three men who will represent the US. Representing the ladies will be Shalane Flanagan, Desiree Davila, and Kara Goucher.

Motor Sports Racers Honored at Napa Auto Parts Banquet

The Big Bear Valley is home to motor sports racers in a variety of disciplines, from desert racing to short track, dirt and asphalt racing, motorcycles, junior dragsters, and even go kart racing. This week motor sports racers were honored at the Napa Auto Parts Racer of the Year dinner and banquet. Over 50 people were in attendance to recognize racers of the year Ernie Serfas, and Rick Romans who both took the championships in their respective classes. Serfas races 1450 trucks, and Romans races class 1 unlimited, both with Mojave Off Road Racing Enthusiasts, down in the Johnson Valley area. The youngest racer in attendance was seven year old Austin Edwards, who is following his father Tony’s footsteps into the racing arena. Austin has been racing go karts since he was five years old, and next year Austin will be of age to start competing in Bandoleros, which is a vehicle with a high performance small engine, and helps transition youngsters from go kart to a full size car. Other local race champions include Cliff and Jim Conklin, Johnny Russo, and Sean Walters. The Mojave off-road racing will start up for 2012 on January 21^st, with other forms of racing to follow.
