BVUSD Board Selects Interim Superintendent of Schools and Interim Assistant Superintendent of Business Services

Big Bear, CA, June 5, 2015 – On Wednesday evening, during a Regular Board Meeting, the BVUSD Governing Board appointed Mr. Ron Peavy to serve as Interim Superintendent of Schools and Dr. John Niederkorn to serve as Interim Assistant Superintendent of Business Services for Bear Valley Unified School District effective July 1, 2015. Mr. Peavy served as Superintendent for Bear Valley Unified from 1996 to March, 2004 and as Interim Superintendent from July 1, 2006 through November 20, 2006. Prior to the Superintendent position, Mr. Peavy served in Bear Valley as a teacher and a high school counselor. In addition to his years in Bear Valley, Mr. Peavy served Rim of the World Unified School District as Interim Superintendent of Schools and Superintendent of Schools. Dr. Niederkorn served as Director of Business Services/Assistant Superintendent of Business Services for Bear Valley Unified from 1995 to 2004. Prior to the Director and Assistant Superintendent positions, Dr. Niederkorn served in Bear Valley as Principal of North Shore Elementary School from 1982 to 1988 and Principal of Big Bear Middle School from 1988 to 1995. Maple Lane Closure Today for “Every 15 Minutes” Event

Big Bear City, CA, June 2, 2015 – The Big Bear Sheriff’s Station, California Highway Patrol, and Office of Traffic Safety has partnered with Big Bear High School to present “Every 15 Minutes” on Tuesday and Wednesday, June 2 and 3, 2015. This intense two-day program focuses on high school students, raising awareness about the reality and consequences of drinking and driving, and inspiring students to make informed, smart decisions as they prepare to celebrate prom and graduation. Today, participants will reenact an alcohol-related traffic collision on Maple Lane in front of Big Bear High School. As a result of this event, Maple Lane will be closed between Big Bear Boulevard (SR-38) and Baldwin Lane. The closure will start at 8:00 am and will continue until 12:00 pm. The community is urged to plan ahead and use alternate routes. The multi-casualty collision scenario will involve students from Big Bear High School and first responders from Big Bear Fire Department, California Highway Patrol, and the Big Bear Sheriff’s Station. Additionally, throughout the school day, the Grim Reaper will remove one student from class every 15 minutes and their obituary will be read, representing one more death from an alcohol related traffic collision. BVUSD Superintendent Kurt Madden Resigns

Big Bear, CA, May 12, 2015 – At Monday’s Special Board meeting of the Bear Valley Unified School District, Superintendent Kurt Madden gave his resignation to the Board effective July 1st.  Mr. Madden has accepted a position in the Bonita Unified School District as Superintendent.  Chairman, Bev Grabe, expressed that the Board sadly accepted his resignation.  Kegham Tashjian and Dick Bray, advisors from the San Bernardino County Superintendent of School’s office, lead the discussion to explain the process of finding a replacement for Mr. Madden using County services that are offered to BVUSD at no charge.  Mr. Tashjian outlined a proposed process and timeline for the Superintendent job search.   The search process is lengthy and includes meetings with Board members, representatives of classified, certificated and management staff as well as community member focus groups to  determine the requirements and qualifications of what is needed in our District for our future Superintendent.  The ultimate decision making powers are held by the Board members.  Mr. Tashjian went on to explain that the time frame of finding a permanent Superintendent is too short and the Board will need to consider an Interim Superintendent.  Mr. Tashjian has served our District as Interim Superintendent in the past but is currently unavailable. Big Bear Middle School Receives the 2015 California Gold Ribbon Award

Big Bear Lake, CA, May 5, 2015 – Big Bear Middle School is being recognized as a 2015 California Gold Ribbon Schools recipient.  A letter from Tom Torlakson, the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, states that the award is a direct reflection of the dedication, hard work, and vision of the Big Bear Middle School’s educational community.  The California Gold Ribbon Schools award was created as a program to replace the California Distinguished Schools Program for middle and high schools in 2015 and focuses on California schools that have made tremendous gains in implementing the academic content and performance standards adopted by the State.  School principal, Dena Arbaugh, tells Kbear that teachers at the Middle School have transitioned into Common Core while focusing on 21st Century learning skills and concepts that teach to the student’s future as opposed to our past.  The “STEM for All” model program gives every BBMS student access to STEM and is helping to close the achievement gap.  STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and math.  The 2015 California Gold Ribbon Schools Recognition award and ceremony will be held on May 22nd in San...

Appears Departure is Imminent for Two Top BVUSD Administrators

Big Bear Lake, CA, April 28, 2015 – In a letter released today by Kurt Madden, Superintendent of the Bear Valley Unified School District, addressed to school district employees, community members, and the media, it was disclosed that top administrators, Kurt Madden, Superintendent, and Walter Con, Assistant Superintendent of Business Services, are both being considered for positions in other school districts.  Mr. Madden for a position in the Bonita Unified School District and Mr. Con for a position in the Orcutt Union School District.  Part of the exploration process includes community visitations by the different districts to conduct interviews of various staff and community members which will take place this Wednesday and Thursday.  In addition, the letter states that updates will be provided if an official decision is made relative to their employment...
