No School Today For Sites Within the Big Bear Valley

City, Parks, and Schools Compete For DWP’s Biggest Loser

Big Bear, CA, July 27, 2015 – The spreadsheets are complete, the meters read, the data is entered and the results are in. The Bear Valley Unified School District  has won Round One for the Big Bear Lake Department of Water’s Biggest Loser competition. In May Reggie Lamson, the DWP General Manager, and Sierra Orr, Water Conservation and Public Information Specialist met with key staff from each agency: the City of Big Bear Lake, the Big Bear Parks and Recreation District and the Bear Valley Unified School District to discuss ways the “Big Three” could help the community meet or beat the 16% conservation goal. To determine who shed the most water use DWP compared their total consumption for the month of June, across all facilities, and compared it to their total consumption in June of 2013 (the baseline year for California’s mandated water use reduction). BVUSD has slashed their water use by more than half, reducing their monthly use from 2.59 million gallons down to 1.22 million gallons. BVUSD Board Selects Interim Superintendent of Schools and Interim Assistant Superintendent of Business Services

Big Bear, CA, June 5, 2015 – On Wednesday evening, during a Regular Board Meeting, the BVUSD Governing Board appointed Mr. Ron Peavy to serve as Interim Superintendent of Schools and Dr. John Niederkorn to serve as Interim Assistant Superintendent of Business Services for Bear Valley Unified School District effective July 1, 2015. Mr. Peavy served as Superintendent for Bear Valley Unified from 1996 to March, 2004 and as Interim Superintendent from July 1, 2006 through November 20, 2006. Prior to the Superintendent position, Mr. Peavy served in Bear Valley as a teacher and a high school counselor. In addition to his years in Bear Valley, Mr. Peavy served Rim of the World Unified School District as Interim Superintendent of Schools and Superintendent of Schools. Dr. Niederkorn served as Director of Business Services/Assistant Superintendent of Business Services for Bear Valley Unified from 1995 to 2004. Prior to the Director and Assistant Superintendent positions, Dr. Niederkorn served in Bear Valley as Principal of North Shore Elementary School from 1982 to 1988 and Principal of Big Bear Middle School from 1988 to 1995. Maple Lane Closure Today for “Every 15 Minutes” Event

Big Bear City, CA, June 2, 2015 – The Big Bear Sheriff’s Station, California Highway Patrol, and Office of Traffic Safety has partnered with Big Bear High School to present “Every 15 Minutes” on Tuesday and Wednesday, June 2 and 3, 2015. This intense two-day program focuses on high school students, raising awareness about the reality and consequences of drinking and driving, and inspiring students to make informed, smart decisions as they prepare to celebrate prom and graduation. Today, participants will reenact an alcohol-related traffic collision on Maple Lane in front of Big Bear High School. As a result of this event, Maple Lane will be closed between Big Bear Boulevard (SR-38) and Baldwin Lane. The closure will start at 8:00 am and will continue until 12:00 pm. The community is urged to plan ahead and use alternate routes. The multi-casualty collision scenario will involve students from Big Bear High School and first responders from Big Bear Fire Department, California Highway Patrol, and the Big Bear Sheriff’s Station. Additionally, throughout the school day, the Grim Reaper will remove one student from class every 15 minutes and their obituary will be read, representing one more death from an alcohol related traffic collision. BVUSD Superintendent Kurt Madden Resigns

Big Bear, CA, May 12, 2015 – At Monday’s Special Board meeting of the Bear Valley Unified School District, Superintendent Kurt Madden gave his resignation to the Board effective July 1st.  Mr. Madden has accepted a position in the Bonita Unified School District as Superintendent.  Chairman, Bev Grabe, expressed that the Board sadly accepted his resignation.  Kegham Tashjian and Dick Bray, advisors from the San Bernardino County Superintendent of School’s office, lead the discussion to explain the process of finding a replacement for Mr. Madden using County services that are offered to BVUSD at no charge.  Mr. Tashjian outlined a proposed process and timeline for the Superintendent job search.   The search process is lengthy and includes meetings with Board members, representatives of classified, certificated and management staff as well as community member focus groups to  determine the requirements and qualifications of what is needed in our District for our future Superintendent.  The ultimate decision making powers are held by the Board members.  Mr. Tashjian went on to explain that the time frame of finding a permanent Superintendent is too short and the Board will need to consider an Interim Superintendent.  Mr. Tashjian has served our District as Interim Superintendent in the past but is currently unavailable.
