1st Goldsmith’s Race Results

Big Bear, Ca, December 20, 2011, 8:00am – The first Goldsmith’s Ski race of the season took place this past Sunday, and despite cold weather conditions and low visibility, many local children and even a few adults braved the temperatures and participated in the slalom race.  The harsh conditions made for an icy course, resulting in quite a few racers skiing off course, or not finishing.  Stand out performances of the day went to John Micheal Fabrizi with the fastest combined time of the day with one minute and 19 seconds for both runs, Nationally ranked Stephanie Lebby, who with total combined time of one minute and twenty three seconds was the fastest lady of the day, and was only beat by three boys.  In the Masters division Susan Kendall laid down the fastest masters time for both men and women with a time of one minute and 33 seconds. Forty Six year old Kendall raced in the collegiate league in her twenties, and has proven that she still remembers her college race training.  Other winners for the race team and masters in their respective categories include:  Johann Auer, Emerson Warren, Sean Murphy, Elle Williams, Alec Burton, Kelly Kai Tokunaga, Delany Warren, McKinley Warren, John Boucher, Alex Baroian, and Marcelle Howard- Goodsell.  Winners in the Dteam categories include: Ryan Dosa, Callie Brzenzski, Devon Garber, Haley Hoskins, Jonas Simko, Annaliese...

Healing the Forest with Music at the Discovery Center

Big Bear, Ca May 14, 2011 3:00 pm – Music in the Mountains is the National Forest Association’s annual concert series benefiting the youth programs at the Big Bear Discovery Center.  Four concerts will be offered during the 2011 season.  On June 25 at 7 pm, experience the music of the Eagles with the The Long Run.  July 16 at 7 pm, the Journey tribute band DSB will be appearing.  July 30 the Big Bear Mountain Music Festival begins at 4:00 pm featuring the Misfit Cowboys, Sligo Rags, and Salty Suites.  The season concludes on Labor Day Weekend, with Jim Curry’s Tribute to the Music of John Denver.  Community supporters for the music series include Coldwell Banker, The Tim Wood Group, and the Lighthouse Project, with sponsorships by the City of Big Bear Lake, Northwoods Resort, Big Bear Mountain Resorts, and the Big Bear Lake Resort Association.  Tickets are available at the Discovery Center’s Adventure Outpost and online at nationalforestassociation.org.  Proceeds from the music events support youth service and learning forest restoration projects, in addition to after school science and forest stewardship programs offered by the Discovery Center. Kiwanis’ Hope for America Celebration

Big Bear, Ca May 2, 2011 9:00 am – The Kiwanis Club of Big Bear Valley will honor 22 students at a ceremony to be held at the Performing Arts Center tonight.  Kiwanis is a global volunteer organization dedicated to “changing the world, one child and one community at a time.”  Hope for America is a program of Kiwanis’ California-Nevada-Hawaii Foundation, recognizing and encouraging students who demonstrate leadership, good character, and a devotion to learning.  The Big Bear students receiving the awards have been selected by their school teachers and principals.  Each student will be presented with a CNH Foundation plaque, a $100 savings bond, and share with the audience their achievements and future plans.  Prior to the awards presentation, the High School Jazz Band will perform beginning at 6:30 pm.  The public is invited to attend, free of charge....

Earth Day at the Big Bear Discovery Center

This year’s Earth Day celebrations at the Big Bear Discovery Center on Saturday include something for the entire family.  The new mobile Forest Explorer van will be visiting, with interactive displays showing a healthy forest, as well as information for homeowners on how to thin trees in their yards and help to make neighborhoods firesafe.  A group of youth volunteers, including a local homeschool group will be offering ongoing solar oven demonstrations and crafts between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm, and an adult volunteer will tell stories at 12:30 pm.  The regularly scheduled nature walks will are leaving the bronze grizzly in front of the Discovery Center at 1:00 and 2:00 pm and the Adventure Outpost store will be open for browsing between activities.  The Big Bear Discovery Center is on the north side of the lake at 40971 North Shore Drive, in Fawnskin.  Call 909-866-3437 for additional information.
